Ellie Middleton, PhD, IBERA Diplomate is an environmental scientist and geochemist with over a decade of experience in metals, mining, and critical mineral assessment. In her most recent role with NiPERA (the science branch of the Nickel Institute), she spent nearly 7 years leading research on nickel’s environmental behavior, risk assessment, and regulatory science. Holding a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from Colorado School of Mines (2016), she brings specialized expertise in bioavailability modeling, environmental chemistry and toxicology, and risk assessment frameworks. To date, her work has supported the development and implementation of environmental regulations across North America, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and Southeast Asia, with particular focus on metals mixtures, environmental quality standards, and compliance with frameworks including the Clean Water Act, REACH, and CERCLA.
Also a Diplomate of the International Board of Environmental Risk Assessors (IBERA), Ellie excels at translating complex technical concepts for policymakers and non-technical stakeholders. Her project portfolio includes developing risk assessment guidance for chemical industries in emerging economies, reviewing technical materials for regulatory settings and advocacy efforts, and managing concurrent multi-stakeholder research initiatives. To date, Ellie has authored or coauthored over 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts in scientific literature and is an active member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC). She is committed to delivering rigorous, understandable science that drives meaningful regulatory and environmental outcomes.
