Graham, Adam and Iain have worked with colleagues across the world to develop a ‘road map’ for the regulatory implementation of metal bioavailability detailed in a recent publication in Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management: Bioavailability and risk assessment of metals in freshwaters: is global regulatory implementation keeping pace with scientific developments?

Specifically, through collaborative working with authors in the U.S., Canada and Australia and New Zealand it has been possible to identify the key challenges associated with adopting a practical framework to use bioavailability in routine metals risk assessments in freshwaters. Further, we have been able to establish the most successful components and activities in each regulatory jurisdiction in order to provide a clear path for those setting off on this journey. It is clear from the identification of these successful components that a key commonality between all is the need for collaborative, positive problem solving between regulators, academics and industry.
