Chris Watts, PhD is a Director of Chris Watts Associates Ltd and an organic environmental chemist with more than 35 years experience in research and consultancy on the sources, fate, behaviour and effects of chemicals in the environment. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a member of their expert committees on chemical risk assessment. He was involved in the development of parts of the guidance in the technical guidance document (EU TGD) on environmental risk assessment of chemicals used for ESR and NoNS. Chris has specialist expertise in aspects of modeling and monitoring of organic chemicals in the environment and in risk assessment under previous (e.g., ESR and NONS) and current (REACH) regulatory regimes and has project managed and contributed to several risk assessments of both single substances and complex materials. Clients that Chris has worked for include CEFIC, CONCAWE, UKAS, the Environment Agency, Defra, major international consultancies and many industrial companies.
Chris was a registered Environmental Auditor and has conducted Environmental Reviews of major companies manufacturing diverse products including chemicals to assess their compliance with the ISO 14001 Environmental Management Standard. He is also an auditor for the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and assesses the technical competence of laboratories analysing environmental samples (air, water, effluents, waste etc.) in respect of compliance with the ISO 17025 standard. Chris has also conducted environmental reviews of chemical manufacturing facilities in respect of pollution incidents and represented both the companies and the environmental regulators in this respect.
