Derivation of Water Framework Directive Environmental Quality Standards

In 2005, the Department of Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (Defra) proposed that the UKTAG Chemistry Task Team (CTT) should develop standards for certain Dangerous Substances Directive (DSD) List II substances as Annex VIII substances under the Water Framework Directive. These are substances for which EQSs are currently available, i.e. List II parameters as listed

Classifying waterbodies affected by abandoned metals mines under the WFD

We were commissioned by the Environment Agency of England and Wales (EA) to investigate whether conventional EQS are suitably protective of aquatic life in waterbodies impacted by abandoned metal mines, or if higher metal concentrations can be acceptable in these waterbodies. Importantly, we provided guidance on how to correctly classify these waterbodies under the Water Framework Directive.

User-friendly tool for calculating the bioavailability of metals under the WFD: bio-met.net

The bio-met project has developed a free website (bio-met.net) to guide those interested in using bioavailability-based approaches for assessing the risk of metals in the freshwater aquatic environment, particularly within the EU Water Framework Directive.
